A former Harrogate councillor accused of posting antisemitic social media posts appeared in court today (November 19).

Pat Marsh, 77, appeared at York Magistrates Court this afternoon charged with one offence of distributing written material to stir up racial hatred.

The case was due to be heard at Harrogate Magistrates Court on November 6, but it was adjourned and transferred to York for legal reasons. Ms Marsh did not attend that hearing.

Ms Marsh, who served as a local councillor for more than three decades, was present at today’s hearing, when she spoke only to confirm her name and address.

Ms Marsh is alleged to have published or distributed posts on X, formerly Twitter, which were threatening, abusive or insulting on at least five occasions between January 21 and February 19, 2024.

It is claimed Ms Marsh, of Harrogate Road in Knaresborough, intended to stir up racial hatred or racial hatred was likely to be stirred up.

No plea was entered and the case was transferred to York Crown Court, where Ms Marsh is due to appear on December 22.

Ms Marsh was for many years the leader of the Harrogate and Knaresborough Liberal Democrats, and represented the Stray, Woodlands and Hookstone ward on North Yorkshire Council.

She resigned as a councillor in February 2024.
