Former Harrogate pupil George Mills has won silver at the European Athletics Championships in Rome.
Mills, whose former England footballer father Danny was there to cheer him on, was denied gold by 23-year-old Norwegian Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
Mills finished the 5,000 metres — the same distance as a park run — in 13 minutes and 21 seconds to win Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s first gold at the major championships yesterday (June 8).
Mills told his 30,000 Instagram followers:
It’s another step in the right direction and more evidence that we’re on the right track
This is a team effort and everyone who’s been involved behind the scenes has made this possible. As of now back to work.
With the Paris Olympics taking place from July 26 to August 11, Mills added any celebrations would be put on ice until the end of the season in September while his dad hailed him as one of the most dedicated athletes he knows.
Mills, 25, finished last season strongly by running the third fastest time ever by a British athlete in the mile, as reported by the Stray Ferret here.
He has carried that good form into 2024 and is now enjoying the best spell of his career.
Mills went to Ashville College, Brackenfield School and St Aidan’s Church of England High School in Harrogate but spends most of the year abroad now, training and competing.
