Plans to create an additional seating area and expand staff facilities at a Harrogate farm shop and café have been approved.
Yorkshire Agricultural Society, the charity behind the Great Yorkshire Show, submitted plans to develop Fodder on Railway Road.
The proposal, submitted in August, sought to create a bigger seating area in the café.
It also requested permission to build two further extensions to relocate staff facilities and move the existing ‘Fodder on the Hoof’ takeaway area to a more permanent home.
North Yorkshire Council approved the application yesterday (December 17) subject to conditions.
The society said it hoped the move would make it easier for café visitors to find a seat at peak times.
It also said the extension would allow the Fodder team to review its existing layout to “ensure that adequate circulation space is provided, particularly for those with pushchairs or wheelchairs”.
The extension will be built to the east of the existing building, where the current outdoor seating area is (pictured below).

The café extension would be erected here.
In addition, the society applied to add another extension to the south-west side of the existing building to improve and relocate staff facilities.
Plans say:
Proposed internal operational alterations within the wider building will necessitate the relocation of the existing staff facilities out of the main building.
It will sit on land currently occupied by the existing ‘Fodder on the Hoof’ Airstream which will be removed from the site.

The society is also set to erect a third extension – this time to the south-west of the proposed new staff unit – to give its existing takeaway provision a more permanent home.
‘Fodder on the Hoof’ currently operates out of a caravan to the south-west of the existing building. Plans say:
This offers a range of seasonal, quality hot and cold food and drinks to take away and is a popular feature on the site. The structure has been on the site for approximately 10 years and is no longer fit for purpose and needs replacing.
It is proposed to replace this with an extension to the south-west of the proposed staff facilities extension to provide a more permanent home for the existing ‘Fodder on the Hoof’ offer.

According to plans, the ‘Fodder on the Hoof’ changes will be completed first, followed by the café seating extension and, finally, the staff facilities extension.
The changes are expected to create an additional two full-time, four part-time and several seasonal job roles.
The Stray Ferret contacted the society for more information on the plans, including whether the café would shut during development and how many additional seats will be created, but the charity declined to comment at this stage.
