North Yorkshire’s Green Party has welcomed the election of its new party leader, Zack Polanski.

Mr Polanski was elected as the leader of the Green Party of England and Wales with a landslide victory this morning.

The former actor and London Assembly member defeated joint candidates, the Green MPs Adrian Ramsay and Ellie Chowns, by 20,411 votes to 3,705.

Cllr Arnold Warneken, Green Party councillor who represents Ouseburn on North Yorkshire Council, described the party’s new leader as someone who will “stand up for ordinary people”.

He said:

He’s a fearless and charismatic leader, which is just what we need. Zack will challenge fake news. He’ll stand up for ordinary people and show that they haven’t been abandoned.

He will show that the Green Party is serious about much more the environment and is a real alternative to the main parties. He won’t sit on the fence, or go back on policies to get votes.

And with Zack in charge, farmers and the rural economy can feel confident that he will protect their interests. As as a region, we’ll know God’s Own County is in safe hands – he will protect our two national parks, our rivers and special coastline.

During his victory speech, Mr Polanski pledged bold policies, including nationalising water companies, and promised to "replace" Sir Keir Starmer's Labour Party.
