Here in Yorkshire, we’re proud of our quirky traditions and singular events – think Minskip Scarecrow Festival, the Knaresborough Bed Race and Harrogate’s Crime Writing Festival, to name a few.
Last weekend was the date for another one of those uniquely Yorkshire occasions – the Boroughbridge Duck Race. Our photo gallery from the day captures all the thrills and spills from the much-loved event.
The lifestyle team also covered a celebration of a different kind – Craft & Social, a local provider of day services for adults with special educational needs and disabilities, recently celebrated its 20th anniversary.
We were delighted to visit the team in Knaresborough, meet some of the students, and chat about what the past two decades have looked like.
Saturday, August 24 was National Waffle Day – and while it might be an unknown celebration to many UK residents, our food writer Yemi showed us how to embrace this Stateside tradition, with not one, but two delicious waffle recipes.
Looking ahead to the weekend, our biweekly history series is back, in which we delve in deeper into the background behind some of the district’s commemorative plaques.
So far, it’s offered a fascinating insight into the stories that have shaped the region, and this time, the spotlight is back on Knaresborough.
Ahead of the 10-day Heritage Open Days festival - where buildings not regularly open to the public welcome visitors – we’re highlight three of the venues, with the most interesting, and mysterious, backstories.
Our regular Photo of the Week column is still open for entries, even for non-subscribers.
You don’t have to be a professional photographer either – if you’ve got a phone or camera, and a passion for capturing images that showcase the very best of Yorkshire, don’t hesitate to send your snap in to letters@thestrayferret.co.uk.
We’ll then post it on our website, newsletter, and social media platforms, so others can enjoy it too – with credit to yourself of course.
Finally, subscribers to the Stray Ferret can take advantage of a range of fantastic exclusive offers, discounts and giveaways from local businesses, which we regularly update.
This week we’re highlighting our partnership with Stump Cross Caverns, which is offering 10% off tickets with a code, when purchased online.
Don’t miss out on quality local news in the district - by subscribing for just £4.99 a month or £49.99 annually, you will be able to access all daily news, in-depth features and lifestyle content as well as a whole range of fantastic exclusive discounts and offers.
