In August last year a sinkhole opened up in a Ripon field

Firefighters from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service returned this week to a field on the north side of Ripon where a sinkhole opened up at the weekend.

The void, with an estimated 20-foot diameter and of unknown depth, was first inspected by members of a Ripon-based crew on Sunday.

An entry on the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service incident log for 10.47 on that day, read:

A crew from Ripon responded to a report of a large sinkhole, which had appeared in a field. The crew attended the scene and cordoned off the area. They also gave advice to the landowner.

The firefighters who attended yesterday afternoon, told the Stray Ferret that with public safety in mind, they were checking to see if the sinkhole, located in a field near River View Road, had increased in size.

There was no evidence that it had, but it was noted that the water level inside it had risen.

Parts of Ripon located in areas that lie on top of a gypsum deposit are prone to sinkhole activity, especially at times of high rainfall, where water can cause the underlying solube rock to disolve and colllapse.
