Five beer gardens in the Harrogate district to enjoy in the sun
The long winter months feel a lifetime ago today (April 8), as sun and blue skies engulf the Harrogate district.
As temperatures soar, you may be wondering where you can celebrate the occasion with a cold drink.
In true British fashion, we suggest you whip the shorts out of the cupboard and make your way to a local beer garden.
Here's a list of five beer gardens worth a try.
1. Knaresborough Working Men’s Club
Possibly the greatest hidden gem on this list (or any list, for that matter) is Knaresborough Working Men’s Club.
Unassuming from the front on Kirkgate, you wouldn’t expect the sights from the back to rival any in the district. But they do.
A good seat in the pub’s beer garden will get you spectacular views of Knaresborough’s famous viaduct, and the River Nidd.
Drinks are reasonably priced, and the venue is open until 11pm Tuesday to Thursday. It stays open 30 minutes later on Fridays and Saturdays and 30 minutes less on Sundays.
2. The Water Rat, Ripon
Ripon’s riverside pub, The Water Rat, combines nature and nurture. And by nurture, we mean looking after yourself with a cold one.
Nestled next to the River Skell, you can enjoy the calming sounds of water flowing while enjoying a drink. The cathedral is also visible, if you’re inclined to wonder at man-made marvels.
There is a good selection of wines, ales, and spirits, and food prices are reasonable. The bar is open until 11pm from Tuesday to Sunday.
3. The Sportsman’s Arms, Wath
The Sportsman's Arms offers punters the perfect place to relax with a drink.
Tucked away in the beautiful Nidderdale village of Wath, the beer garden provides a brilliant sun trap for those looking to top up their tans as well as their glasses.
The Sportsman’s Arms has a wide range of drinks on offer, including an extensive wine list if you’re not planning on doing anything else for the rest of the evening. It is open until 11pm from Wednesday to Saturday and until 4pm on Sunday.
4. The Joiner’s Arms, Hampsthwaite
Located in the quaint village of Hampsthwaite, The Joiner’s Arms offers an often-overlooked beer garden at the back perfect for a relaxed outing.
With plenty of tables, a wide range of beers, and a well-kept lawn and hedging, The Joiner’s Arms is the perfect place to enjoy some leisure time with the family.
The Joiner’s Arms is open until 11pm from Wednesday to Saturday, and until 10.30pm on Sunday.
5. Tap on Tower Street, Harrogate
A favourite of many in Harrogate, the Tap on Tower Street boasts a front beer garden that benefits from the sunshine for much of the day.
There are plenty of benches with umbrellas and a good selection of beer, ales, wines and other drinks.
There are some solid pizzas on offer, too.
The Tap on Tower Street is open until 11pm from Sunday-Thursday and until 12am Friday and Saturday.
