Firefighters dealt with a blaze at a tyre factory in Harrogate. Rush hour traffic was badly affected around Skipton Road. Here's what happened.

6.17pm: Situation appears to be easing

The situation appears to be under control now; it appears the firefighters have contained the blaze but we await further details. Friday night rush hour traffic on Skipton Road is always bad but tonight has been particularly difficult with road closures.

Traffic came turn left on to Skipton Road from King's Road but can't turn right, as that is where the incident occurred. The reverse also applies. i.e. you can turn right on to King's Road from Skipton Road but can't go straight ahead.

There are also diversions at the other end of the incident, near the junction with Woodfield Road.

6.10pm: Report that fire is extinguished

Our reporter on the scene Flora Grafton has just spoken to a firefighter, who said the fire has been extinguished and a fire investigation team is on its way.

6.06pm: Fire crews at old Jewson site

A lot of activity is centred on the old Jewson building on Skipton Road, which is just metres from Harrogate Fire Station.

6.04pm: Eyewitness photos sent to Stray Ferret

An eyewitness who lives near the scene has sent us these photos.

5.56pm: Paramedic not aware of any casualties

Our reporter on the scene has spoken to some paramedics who say they are not aware of any casualties.

She adds:

"The road is blocked from the junction that leads into King's Road and Skipton Road by Waterloo Street (where Full Circle Funerals is)."

There is queueing traffic all around the area — avoid.

5.38pm: Smoke billowing over Skipton Road

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the incident on Roker Road, which is close to the fire station on Skipton Road, was ongoing.

Smoke has been seen billowing over Skipton Road.

Both Harrogate crews are attending, along with extra appliances from Knaresborough, Tadcaster and Ripon.

The aerial ladder platform from Harrogate has also been deployed.

The fire service said the alert came at 4.50pm. It added:

"Harrogate crews responded to reports of smoke sighted near a building, on arrival it was confirmed fire involving a tyre factory was involved and a further three appliances and aerial ladder platfrom were requested.
"The extra appliances responded from Knaresborough, Tadcaster, Ripon and the aerial ladder platform was from Harrogate."

We will update this story when more details are available.
