A man has been arrested following an outbreak of graffiti at Fountains Abbey, near Ripon.
North Yorkshire Police issued a CCTV image of a man it wanted to talk to following the incident on Sunday night at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, which attracts over 400,000 visitors a year.
A police statement today said:
Officers investigating the criminal damage incident at Fountains Abbey that took place on Sunday, February 16 have made an arrest.
Last night (February 19) a man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. He currently remains in police custody.
The graffiti was painted onto the abbey and St Mary's Church. The paint was oil-based meaning considerable damage has been done to the medieval stonework and the National Trust are working to rectify this.

The ancient abbey is one of the largest and best-preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England.
