Ripon, with its rich military history, struck all the right notes as it celebrated the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe, with a night of nostalgia.
From the magnificent peal of bells that greeted concert-goers attending the VE Day Proms at Ripon Cathedral, to the hornblower's setting of the watch on Market Square, the city that is home to the Royal Engineers was in party mood.
Tomorrow (Saturday) members of 21 Engineer Regiment will take over the square as they put on a display of military hardware from 10am and on Sunday morning, the sappers will hold their annual march along Ripon's streets - a tradition that they have followed since 1949, when their service in World War Two earned them the Freedom of the City.
The march starts from Spa Gardens at 10am and wll arrive at the cathedral for the 10.30 Sung Eucharist service, at which the newly-elected Mayor, Councillor Jackie Crozier will be installed as Ripon's first citizen.
The Stray Ferret will be present to report on all the weekend's VE 80th anniversary events.
