A Harrogate athlete has broken the British record for the 3,000 metres at an indoor event in France.

George Mills, son of former Leeds footballer Danny Mills, ran a time of 7:27.92 at the Meeting de l’Eure in Val-de-Reuil.

The runner significantly beat the previous British record of 7:30.14, which was set by Olympic 1,500m silver medallist Josh Kerr.

Mills' time sits ninth on the global indoor 3,000m rankings — ahead of British running legend Mo Farah.

The former St Aidan's Church of England High School pupil, who spends most of the year training abroad now, smashed his previous best time of 7:54.27 by almost 27 seconds.

The indoor world record for the 3,000m is held by Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma at 7:23.81, which was set in 2023. Norwegian Jakob Ingebritsen currently holds the outdoor world record at 7:17.55, which he set in 2024.

Mills was involved in an incident during the 5,000m in the 2024 Paris Olympics in which he collided with France’s Hugo Hay, resulting in a four-man pile-up. After a review, the four fallers were progressed through to the final.

Despite this, Mills did not live up to the high expectations on his shoulders and finished 21st out of 22 runners in the final.
