Major changes have been announced for two village pubs near Knaresborough that have acquired a reputation for food.

Mark and Clare Oglesby, the owners of Goldsborough Hall, have operated The Bay Horse Inn for five years. But they have announced in a statement they will be handing it over in the next few days.

The couple, however, also revealed they will be taking on the Tiger Inn at Coneythorpe.

The Bay Horse in Goldsborough is owned by pub company Stonegate Group. It will be open all week and will serve food until 5pm on Sunday, October 6. It is then expected to re-open under a new operator on October 11.

The Oglesbys' statement added:

After five years of trying to restore and save our village pub, we have failed to agree terms with Stonegate, the owners of the pub, over the renewal of the lease.

When we opened in late 2019 the world was a different place and 2020 was set to be an amazingly busy year. What followed was devastating for many people and businesses. The pub has never recovered from it, with a nightmare of rising costs and staff availability.

They added they had tried unsuccessfully to buy the inn from Stonegate and added that they understand "the new tenant intends to keep the staff and have it back open as soon as possible". They said they would work with them "to make that transition as smooth as possible and continue to support the village that we have been part of for 19 years now".

The couple went on to say they had bought the nearby Tiger Inn.

The pub, which suffered two fires in three years, was listed for auction in August at a guide price of £275,000 after previously being put up for sale in February at £495,000.

The Oglebys said they were now planning their newest venture, and hope the Tiger Inn will be up and running by next spring at the latest.

"It requires a good amount of work to get back open, which we are getting quotes for at the moment", Mr Ogleby added.
