A man who imported drugs into Guernsey before fleeing to Boroughbridge was jailed on Wednesday (May 14).
Jamie Ferbrache returned to Guernsey following a trip to Manchester in March 2019.
Bailiwick Law Enforcement today said Ferbrache had checked in a suitcase at Manchester Airport at the time, which contained a rucksack with 9.37kg of cannabis resin inside.
On arrival in Guernsey, one of Ferbrache’s co-accused, who was working as an airport baggage handler, removed the rucksack from Ferbrache's suitcase.
The airport worker was arrested while taking the drugs away on a baggage truck. Ferbrache and another person were then arrested after being stopped by customs officers upon their arrival.
The 31-year-old defendant had denied attempting to import the cannabis resin into the island but was found guilty at a trial in November 2020.
His sentencing hearing was scheduled for January 2021, alongside the two co-defendants, but he failed to turn up to The Royal Court.
In today’s statement, Bailiwick Law Enforcement said an operation between Guernsey Border Agency and North Yorkshire Police led officers to Boroughbridge, where Ferbrache had been living and working.
According to a Guernsey Press report, Ferbrache had been working as a head chef at a local pub.
Officers located him in Boroughbridge on February 20, 2025, when he was arrested and transported back to Guernsey.
Following a sentencing hearing at The Royal Court, Ferbrache was jailed for a total of seven years and five months for importation of cannabis, failure to provide access to his mobile phone and failing to surrender to custody.
Bailiwick Law Enforcement today added:
Failing to surrender to custody is a serious offence impacting on the proper administration of justice. Bailiwick Law Enforcement officers will actively seek to pursue offenders who have absconded from this jurisdiction.
Guernsey Border Agency would like to thank the North Yorkshire Police Officers involved in this case for their assistance in apprehending Ferbrache and his subsequent return to Guernsey. This collaborative working was essential to ensure that he was brought to justice.
