Harrogate art gallery could be converted to houses
One of Harrogate’s commercial art galleries will be turned back into a private house if a new planning application is approved.
McTague of Harrogate occupies a double-fronted, stone-built Victorian property on Cheltenham Mount that was originally two separate houses.
Now, the building’s owner has applied for a change of use, from class E (commercial unit) to class C3 (residential property), and has submitted plans to return the building to its original format and purpose by blocking the internal doorways between the two sides of the property, creating two dwellings.
McTague of Harrogate specialises in high-quality traditional paintings and rare prints, including paintings of Yorkshire and the north-east.
The gallery was established in 1981 by Paul McTague, who has run it ever since with the help of numerous family members.
He now plans to run the business online only.
Mr McTague’s nephew Richard runs Red House Originals, the modern art gallery next door.
A decision on the application is expected to be made before the end of August.
