Harrogate-based son of Leeds United legend dies
Harrogate-based former footballer Stuart Gray has died at the age of 50 after being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
Stuart, the son of Leeds United legend Eddie Gray and nephew of Frank, played for Celtic and made one appearance for Scotland under-21s.
The Stray Ferret reported last year the father-of-five had been diagnosed with stage four cholangiocarcinoma — also known as bile duct cancer.
The cancer develops in tubes connecting the liver and gallbladder to the small bowel.
Stuart’s brother, Nick, set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for newer, experimental treatments, which raised £50,000 of the £100,000 goal.
Money raised is being donated to the AMMF - a Cholangiocarcinoma charity, which raises awareness of the condition and supports research into achieving earlier diagnosis and effective treatments.
Stuart raised £50,000 on GoFundMe.
Celtic players wore black armbands as a mark of respect during Saturday's match against Ross County.
Stuart also played for Reading, Rushden & Diamonds and Oxford United.
Leeds issued a statement, which said the club was "deeply saddened" by the news. It added:
