Interviews will be held this month to recruit a new chief executive for Harrogate Business Improvement District.

Matthew Chapman left the role suddenly three months ago.

The organisation attributed his departure to “personal reasons” in a brief 60-word statement that didn’t include any tributes, even though Mr Chapman had been in charge for four years and helped secure another five-year term for the organisation in 2023.

York-based Mr Chapman posted on LinkedIn five days ago that he has started a new job as Castleford town centre manager at Wakefield Council.

Moves to fill the role he previously held in Harrogate are progressing.

The deadline for applications for the job, which was advertised on a salary of £50,000 to £60,000, was September 5. Interviews will be held on September 22 and 23.

Bethany Allen, operations and projects executive at the BID, said:

The vacancy received a lot of interest and a strong shortlist has been selected for interview.

Gemma Rio was appointed interim chief executive at the BID after Mr Chapman’s departure.

She declined to be interviewed by the Stray Ferret. Ms Allen said:

The incoming chief executive will be the best person for a proper interview once they’re in place.

In another development, Ed Horner, PR and communications officer at the BID, left last week.

The BID is funded by a levy paid by town centre businesses to devise schemes that encourage more people to visit.
