What are the implications of the recent Assisted Dying Bill? Why is the UK birth rate falling? Can going to war ever be just?
These are some of the questions that have inspired a Harrogate church to host a series of lectures that will raise ethical questions around death, sex, war and artificial intelligence for the first time.
Dr Peter Vardy, a prominent author and thinker on religion and ethics, will give six lectures over the coming weeks.
Dr Vardy was the vice-principal of Heythrop Jesuit College from 1998-2011 and has hosted many ethics conferences for schools globally, with backing from organisations such as the United Nations.
Revd Dr Alan Garrow, the vicar of St Peter’s Church, said the aim was not to shy away from difficult issues:
We commissioned Dr Vardy to give a lecture for the medical society in May, and he offered to do the full set of lectures for us as a charitable act. We are very grateful.
We want to be a church that engages with local people, and we hope that these lectures will help people to feel more connected to one another. We hope that people can come away from these lectures feeling more informed about ethical dilemmas.
We spend so much time listening to advice from people we cannot ask questions back to. This is an opportunity to do the opposite.
Each lecture starts at 7pm and will be roughly an hour long, with opportunity for discussion and light refreshments afterwards.
Dr. Vardy will introduce the course with his first lecture on January 9, “Ethics Matters”.
Subsequent lectures commence as follows:
Tickets are free to book and open to anyone, whether a member of the parish church or not.
