New technology at two Harrogate road junctions looks set to reduce congestion, but at the cost of more disruption in the short term.
The traffic lights at the Otley Road junctions with Cold Bath Road and Pannal Ash Drive are to be fitted with new a MOVA traffic signal control system.
MOVA (microprocessor optimised vehicle actuation) uses sensors to measure traffic flow and speed, and adjusts green traffic-light times and cycle lengths accordingly to keep traffic moving, particularly during busy or unpredictable conditions.
According to the One Network online roadworks map, which is constantly updated, North Yorkshire Council plans to start the scheme on Otley Road on May 5, and it is scheduled to take between five and seven weeks to complete.

The junction of Otley Road with Cold Bath Road and Arthurs Avenue.
During that time, there will be temporary traffic lights in place at the junctions of Otley Road with Cold Bath Road and with Pannal Ash Drive. The work is expected to be completed by June 11 (Cold Bath Road) and June 20 (Pannal Ash Drive).
In a note on the One Network map, the council said:
If you have an enquiry in respect of these essential highway works please contact us on 0300 131 2 131.
More immediately, Yorkshire Water is to install temporary traffic lights on Otley Road while it carries out maintenance work just near Charlie’s Place. The work is due to start tomorrow (Wednesday, April 29) and finish the following day.
