Harrogate councillor Paul Haslam will stand for parliament at the next general election.
Mr Haslam, who represents Bilton and Nidd Gorge on North Yorkshire Council, will contest the Harrogate and Knaresborough seat on July 4 as an independent.
He becomes the sixth candidate to stand in the constituency.
Mr Haslam, who also ran for Mayor of York and North Yorkshire last month, said he felt encouraged to stand for MP after his mayoral campaign.
He said
My campaign will focus on addressing local issues that require national attention and support. I believe in the power of an MP to engage and collaborate with all local stakeholders, including North Yorkshire Council, the new town council, the new mayor, and organisations such as Yorkshire Water and the NHS, to solve local problems.
I aim to foster a spirit of collaboration and innovation, moving beyond siloed approaches.
Meanwhile, Andrew Jones will stand as Conservative candidate in the seat and Tom Gordon will contest the constituency for the Liberal Democrats.
Reform UK has announced John Swales will stand for the party and Connor Whitcroft will be Labour's candidate.
Shan Oakes will contest the constituency for the Green Party.
