Harrogate Cricket Club has passed its fundraising target to repair on-site cricket nets.

The club, which aimed to raise £20,000, will use the money to repair the nets, which are open to the public, as well as the all-weather surface run-ups.

It was today (August 19) announced that the goal was passed thanks to a £2,000 grant donated by the Banks Group.

Club chairman Steve Clark told the Stray Ferret the club has also received anonymous pledges of £5,000 and £20,000, taking the final total to close to £45,000.

The funds will provide improved practice facilities at the St George’s Road ground. Once completed, the nets will be available year-round free of charge.

The funding will also pay for drainage, a scoreboard and covered seating for the back pitch.

Harrogate Cricket Club has four senior men’s teams and two senior women’s teams. It also runs junior teams at every level from under-sevens upwards, and has a growing women’s and girls’ section.

The club has also recently set up a walking cricket group for people aged 55 and over and is working towards playing opportunities for a local visually impaired group.

Susan Bates, volunteer fundraiser at Harrogate Cricket Club, said:

Our community nets are there for anyone that wants to use them whenever they want to, and they’re well used all year round by both our members and lots of other local residents.

They’ve offer people of all ages the chance to find out if they like playing cricket without having to pay a membership fee or venue hire costs, and have often provided the first introduction to the game for players who’ve gone on to join our club or other local sides.

We made improvements to the main practice nets that our members use a couple of years ago, but have since been conscious that the community nets needed work doing on them to keep them up to scratch.
