Harrogate gallery 108 Fine Art is to host a solo exhibition by an up-and-coming British painter this summer.
The show by Rebecca Styles at the gallery on Cold Bath Road is the result of her year-long residency at Thorp Perrow Arboretum, north-east of Masham, and documents the beauty of its 100 acres of parkland throughout the seasons.
Rebecca’s collection of 40 plein air drawings and paintings – works created outdoors – represent her response to Thorp Perrow’s huge variety of plants and trees, which includes five National Plant Collections, as the seasons changed through 2024.
West Yorkshire-born Rebecca said:
Part of the joy of this project was walking in the footsteps of artists like Constable, Monet, or more recently Cecily Brown, and their paintings of stately homes and beautiful gardens. It also offered me the chance to rediscover the English seasons, after two years painting in Scotland’s Western Isles.
The subject matter at Thorp Perrow demanded a distinctly different colour palette, so I looked often to the work of Claude Monet throughout the project and found his use of colour and ways of rendering natural form a great inspiration.

The exhibition will run from Saturday, June 21 to Saturday, August 30. A private viewing will be held on June 21 from 2 till 4pm and will be attended by the owners of Thorp Perrow Arboretum, Sir Henry and Lady Natasha Ropner.
Lady Natasha said:
This is our first art residency at Thorp Perrow, and we are delighted to be working with an artist with such an intimate connection to the British landscape.
The Arboretum is incredibly beautiful, and holds such important collections, so we are excited to see it documented and celebrated in Rebecca’s work.
