Harrogate’s very own professional golfer, John Parry, won £217,000 at the Magical Kenya Open yesterday (February 23).

The 38-year-old, who plays on the DP World Tour, finished second behind South African Jacques Kruyswijk.

Back-to-back birdies on the fourth and fifth holes put Parry in front in the final round.

But a poor tee shot on the 14th hole scuppered his chances and he finished two shots behind Kruyswijk.

Parry is now ranked at 91st in the world ranking- a career best. Two months ago he won the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open in December.

The Stray Ferret spoke to Parry last November, when he had just won three competitions on the 2024 Challenge Tour to secure a spot on the 2025 DP World Tour, formerly known as the European Tour.

Parry, who claimed €262,180.05 in prize money yesterday, told DP World Tour:

I'm very happy with my week. Obviously, it didn't go the way I wanted it today but I played as good as I could, I tried to push him as hard as I could, he just played better on the day really.

Parry is now heading for the Investec South African Open Championship, which starts on Thursday.

He first held a club aged eight and now plays at Harrogate Golf Club when he's not on tour. He has played in two US Opens.

But it has not been all plain sailing for Parry, who has twice been demoted from the top tour.

You can read our full interview with him here.
