The Tipi on the Stray at Harrogate's Cedar Court Hotel.

A Harrogate hotel has applied for planning permission to retain a tipi on its grounds.

Cedar Court Hotel, which is based on Park Parade, has submitted a retrospective planning application for the structure to North Yorkshire Council.

The hotel set up the tipi during the covid pandemic in July 2020 as a temporary measure for outdoor dining when lockdown restrictions were eased.

A permanent structure has been in place since April 2021, which hosts events and services, such as afternoon tea.

In planning documents submitted to the council, the hotel said it was now applying to retain the tipi on the grounds.

However, it added that since the structure has been in place for four years it was “immune from enforcement action” and was considered “lawful development”.

The hotel said in its planning statement that the tipi had now provided a successful income stream for Cedar Court.

It said:

The tipi is an established and successful income stream for the Cedar Court Hotel. It supports the viability and sustainability of the hotel and the hotel business carried out in the listed building.

The tipi also arguably contributes to the wider economy and it satisfies the relevant criteria of the relevant planning policies.

The Stray Ferret has approached Cedar Court Hotels for comment.

North Yorkshire Council will make a decision on the proposal at a later date.
