Harrogate karate club triumphs in national championships

A Harrogate karate club has enjoyed success at a national championships.

Harrogate Shotokan Karate Club topped the medal table at the JKS England Nationals Championships in Grantham last week.

The karate club, which is based at Harrogate High School, secured 49 medals at the event, which saw entries from over 600 competitors across the UK.

The squad of 45 brought home 16 gold medals, 12 silvers and 21 bronzes in a series of kata and kumite competitions.

Kata is pre-arranged forms performed individually, while kumite is sparring matches between competitors.

Chief instructor Sensei Matt Price, a former world champion led the Harrogate team, assisted by coaches Zoe Price, Chris Brown and Gary Maguire.

Price’s family had a successful tournament, with son Jonty winning six medals, daughter Eleanor winning three, and partner Zoe winning one.
