Harrogate Magistrates Court

The Stray Ferret spent the morning at Harrogate Magistrates Court on Thursday (May 22).

We sat through hearings, which included cases of theft and threatening to damage property.

You can read reports on three cases below.

Michael Dunn, of Bower Street in Harrogate, pleaded not guilty of threatening to damage or destroy property.

The 46-year-old allegedly threatened to kick a named person’s door down.

The offence is alleged to have taken place on December 27, 2024.

A trial date was set for July 10.

Man denies thefts at Ripon supermarket

A man denied two thefts at a supermarket in Ripon.

Steven Bainbridge, who is of no fixed abode but gave the court an address in North Stainley, pleaded not guilty to two counts of theft from a shop.

Mr Bainbridge is alleged to have stolen a bottle of Jack Daniel's to the value of £30 from Booths on May 4.

The 35-year-old also allegedly stole another bottle of Jack Daniel's, which was worth £27.50, from the same store on May 7.

The case was adjourned for trial, which will be held on September 25.

Harrogate man admits alcohol theft

Del Johnson, of Yarrow Drive in Harrogate, admitted one offence of theft from a shop.

Mel Ibbotson, prosecuting, told the court Johnson was seen entering Sainsbury’s on Harrogate’s Cambridge Street on CCTV at 6.30pm on May 1.

He selected a crate of Thatchers, which was valued at £13, and left the store without paying.

Johnson was identified through the CCTV footage by a police officer.

The court heard he made a full admission to the offence when interviewed by the police.

Johnson also breached a community order by committing the offence.

Chris McGrogan, defending, told the court Johnson “accepts what he did”.

“He told police his dog had been threatened, which is not an excuse, but he says that’s why he committed the offence”, Mr McGrogan added.

The court heard Johnson has struggled with an addiction to alcohol for a long time, but he has started receiving help from Horizons.

Mr McGrogan said:

Things are in place to address these problems.

A probation officer also told the magistrates Johnson is complying well with his existing order and he is “receiving input in respect of his alcohol abuse”.

The chair of the magistrates’ bench told Johnson:

Things are accumulating for you.

He was handed a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay a £26 surcharge and £13 in compensation.

“I think this might be your last chance – we are trying to help you here”, the chair added.
