A Harrogate man who stole a car and drove it when drunk was jailed at York Magistrates Court yesterday (April 15).

Carl Blackmore, of Spa Lane in Harrogate, pleaded guilty to five offences: driving without insurance, obstructing an officer in the execution of their duty, driving whilst disqualified, drink-driving and taking a car without the owner’s consent.

All of the offences happened on April 13 this year.

According to court documents, Blackmore stole the car at an address on Skellbank in Ripon.

Blackmore drove the car on Burnside Walk in Harrogate despite being banned from driving and having no insurance to drive the vehicle.

Court documents add the 36-year-old defendant was also over the drink-drive limit at the time.

A breath sample recorded 52 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of Blackmore’s breath – the limit being just 35 micrograms.

Blackmore also resisted a named police officer on Burnside Walk.

The magistrates sentenced Blackmore to a total of two months behind bars.

Court documents say the offences were so serious that only a custodial sentence can be justified, adding Blackmore has a “flagrant disregard” for court orders, people and their property.

For the offence of driving whilst disqualified, Blackmore was banned from driving for 30 months. For drink-driving, he was disqualified for 15 months and for the offence of taking a car without the owner's consent, he was banned from driving for 12 months, court documents show.

These will run concurrently, meaning the total length of the ban is 30 months.
