A Harrogate mental health clinic is to be converted to flats.

Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust submitted plans in April to convert the three-storey Dragon Parade Clinic, at the junction of Dragon Parade and Bower Road, into a block of three flats.

North Yorkshire Council has now approved the plans, which will see a two-bedroom flat built on each floor.

The trust is spending £2.1 million to create a new mental health facility at Jesmond House, on Victoria Avenue, as we reported in April here.

The Dragon Parade service will be relocated on completion of the Jesmond House development.

The trust, which oversees mental health services in Harrogate, County Durham and Teesside, is relocating all three of its hubs in Harrogate to the new site.

Its other locations are at Windsor House and Jennyfield Health Centre.

Council case officer Andy Hough said:

The proposed conversion would provide additional small dwellings in a sustainable location within the town of Harrogate.

The proposal will have a neutral impact on the character and appearance of the conservation area. Although only three apartments are proposed they would help assist in meeting the identified shortfall of housing across the district.

A spokesperson for the Tees, Esk and Wear NHS Foundation Trust said:

We’re bringing mental health services together under one roof at this pioneering new facility. Hummingbird House, is located at the former Jesmond House site. It’s close to the town centre, easy to get to and will be a welcoming space for people to access care and support.

It’s been a real joint effort and has involved input from our colleagues, local partners, patients and carers.

Our mental health teams who work out and about in Harrogate are set to move to the new facility. Colleagues based at Windsor House and Dragon Parade will move when the building opens and those at Jennyfield Health Centre will follow.
