A Harrogate midwife is set to take on a London half-marathon in aid of charity.

Rachel Clark will run the Royal Parks Half Marathon in London on October 12 in support of the British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) — a national charity that rehomes thousands of hens every year from egg farms.

Rachel, who works in Harrogate but lives near Northallerton, first adopted hens five years ago after moving to a home with some outdoor space. Since then, she’s re-homed more than 20 birds through the charity.

She said she is running the half-marathon to raise funds for the organisation as she feels chickens are often “overlooked”.

She said:

I love all animals, but chickens in particular are so often overlooked – treated like a commodity, when they’re actually smart, curious and full of personality. Once you’ve had them as pets, you realise how special they are. Mine are amazingly affectionate.

Rachel has been running in her spare time for 15 years. But the London half-marathon will be her first solo fundraising effort.

The Royal Parks Half Marathon was founded in 2008 and sees runners take on a 13.1-mile route around landmarks and four of London’s eight Royal Parks – Hyde Park, The Green Park, St James’s Park and Kensington Gardens.

Andy Hill, from the British Hen Welfare Trust, said:

We’re so grateful to Rachel for going the extra mile – literally – to support our work. Every hen we rehome gets a second chance at life thanks to people like her, and it’s always heartening to see just how passionate our supporters are. We’ll be cheering her on every step of the way.

Rachel has set up a JustGiving page for the event, which can be found here.
