Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) has implemented a new patient record system.
HDFT, which oversees hospitals in Harrogate and Ripon, today (December 16) said the new digital system called Nervecentre EPR (electronic patient record) is a “major step forward in modernising healthcare”.
The new electronic system replaced a paper-based system, and the trust hopes storing patients' information in one place will ensure healthcare professionals can make “quicker and safer decisions”.
The first phase of the new system was launched in November, which included two key features: allowing staff to record observations electronically and enabling the “secure storage of clinical images”, according to HDFT.
HDFT said the move has led to more accurate patient lists and faster alerts for patients who require urgent care.
A sepsis tool has also helped to identify patients at risk and ensure they receive treatment promptly, the trust added.
Dr Jacqueline Andrews, executive medical director at HDFT, said:
This new system is transforming the way we deliver care. By bringing all the important information together, our teams can make quicker decisions and spend more time with patients. It’s a big step towards safer, more efficient care for our community.
A new patient investigations feature was introduced on December 2, which allows doctors to view and file test results on the same system.
HDFT also said Nervecentre EPR means doctors and nurses are able to access information instantly at a patient’s bedside, respond quicker when a patient’s condition changes and invest more time in patient care instead of completing paperwork.
Dermot Ryan, NHS England’s director of digital transformation, added:
Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust’s work to deliver their Electronic Patient Record system will help transform the way care is delivered for patients – including streamlining workflows, reducing administrative tasks and improving data accessibility, as well as laying the digital foundations for innovative technologies that further support clinical practice and enhance patient care.
