Harrogate Rugby Club has secured £1.6 million in funding for facility upgrades.
The club, which is located on Rudding Lane, announced on Saturday (January 17) that the funds were secured specifically for improvements to the clubhouse, grounds and facilities to support its long-term sustainability.
The funding was granted to Harrogate’s charity trustees and will be “locked up” until the end of the year while design and construction plans are developed and planning permission is sought.
Club Chairman, Mark Garrett, said:
Since moving to Rudding Lane, the committee's priority has been to secure the long-term future of the club and ensure there is always somewhere to play rugby in Harrogate for everyone passionate about the game, regardless of age, ability or gender.
Through the hard work of a small group of members, we have successfully reduced debt, secured the club's freehold, and established a charity. Without those actions, this money would not have been secured. Now that it is in place, we can focus on our mission to provide rugby for all in our local community for many years to come.
The club says it is in the early stages of developing ideas and will keep members informed of proposals as they progress.
It adds that it needs to ensure the money is spent wisely to “increase the underlying income”.
The Stray Ferret contacted Harrogate Rugby Club, who remained tight-lipped about where the money had come from.
