A teenage Harrogate running sensation has won his second national title.
Simon Bordewich, 16, won the 400-metre final at the England Athletics Indoor National Championships in Sheffield on Saturday (February 7).
Competing in the under-17s category, Bordewich ran a personal best time of 50.21 seconds, despite colliding with another athlete.
He beat second-placed Archie Spicer by 0.44 seconds.
Bordewich said:
It was tough. I had to run a second quicker than the other finalists to qualify. After the first 200m, I had a collision with another athlete on the bend, meaning I was forced to overtake on the final straight.
Bordewich runs with Harrogate Harriers and previously held the English Schools national 300m title.
He will compete for the national 400m crown in the outdoor championships this summer.
The youngster has big dreams:
In the outdoor season ahead, I am aiming to medal at the English school championships and hopefully be selected to run for England at international championships.
Bordewich, who attends Ripon Grammar School, also won the northern indoor 400m title earlier this year.
He first took up running as a youngster when he joined Ripon’s Fountains Abbey parkrun.
Now, he trains three times a week at the Leeds Beckett University athletics track and also plays rugby for Ripon Grammar School and Ripon Rugby Club.
