A Harrogate school has launched a new outdoor learning initiative to encourage hands-on exploration of the natural world.

Saltergate Schools, on Newby Crescent, introduced its new forest school to promote all-round development.

The weekly sessions are now being delivered to Key Stage One pupils at the school, with the programme set to expand to the entire school next year.

  • The experiences available from these sessions include:
  • Campfire cooking (such as dandelion and banana pancakes)
  • Tyre swings, slacklines, and hammocks
  • Safe tool use (saws, hammers, peelers)
  • Den building and mud kitchen play
  • Creating insect habitats and exploring animals and their environments as part of the science curriculum

The initiative comes as a partnership with Born of the Forest and the Forest School Association. It aims to encourage supported risk-taking, independence, and confidence through learner-led, play-based activities.

Headteacher Jo Hall said:

We are incredibly proud to launch our forest school programme.

It offers children a joyful, active and meaningful way to develop vital life skills and values such as resilience, independence and creativity, fostering a lifelong appreciation for the natural world.

Saltergate Schools recently joined Red Kite Learning Trust, a multi-academy trust of 16 schools across North and West Yorkshire.

Amanda Thornton Jones, director of primary education at the trust, said:

Forest school perfectly reflects our commitment to championing learning that inspires and enriches children’s lives. It’s wonderful to see Saltergate offering children a dynamic and engaging experience that supports both academic success and emotional well-being.
