Harrogate Tesco roadworks: Traffic management plans change

The one-way traffic system on Skipton Road in Harrogate will not be reversed during the current Tesco roadworks.

Roadworks began on Skipton Road to the west of New Park roundabout on August 18 to allow contractors to build a roundabout and access road for a new supermarket.

The plan was to close one half of the road and allow one-way traffic to flow on the other side. Traffic would move eastbound for the first half of the work and westbound for the second half.

But those plans have been amended due to concerns about the diversion route through Killinghall if the one-way route were reversed.

Traffic would then have to turn right at the junction of Otley Road and Ripon Road in the middle of Killinghall. This junction is notoriously difficult for right-turning traffic, especially lorries, and there are frequently delays.

Councillor Michael Harrison, a Conservative whose division includes Killinghall, Hampsthwaite and Saltergate, told the Stray Ferret the decision had therefore been taken to stick with the current arrangement. He added:

The council and Tesco have confirmed to me they will leave it as it is. It means there will still be disruption, but it won’t be as bad as it would have been if the one-way system had been reversed.

A Tesco spokesperson confirmed the change and said the roadworks would remain in place until the end of November.

They were originally due to end on October 27.
