Harrogate Town Council is planning to increase its precept as part of budget proposals for next year.
The authority has proposed more than doubling the charge for a Band D property to £26.
Band D properties currently pay £12.73 to fund the town council's work through their council tax bills.
The town council’s budget proposals estimate the authority will be required to raise around £740,639 for the forthcoming year.
The budget would cover the council’s running costs, staffing and civic duties.
The council also estimates that it will be able to use a £30,000 financial surplus from the current year to propose a lower precept level.
In its report, the council said:
This surplus has arisen from a combination of council’s prudent management and preparing for future activities through the recently completed strategic planning process.
As a newly formed council, usable reserves are only just being established. The current surplus will contribute to building these essential reserves, providing a financial buffer for future years.
Councillors will meet to discuss and vote on the plans at a full council meeting at Harrogate Civic Centre on January 7, 2026.
Final council tax bills will also include contributions to North Yorkshire Council and York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority.
