Harrogate Town’s top scorer, Josh March, has joined Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer.

Posts made to Crewe’s X page last night confirmed the news that the striker had signed a two-year deal with the Railwaymen.

Reports suggest that Harrogate had offered March a new deal, but it was not enough to keep him from moving to Cheshire.

In an interview with his new club, March said:

I’ve always been told to play where you are wanted. Having spoken to the manager, he made me feel I am really wanted here. That was massive to me.

It’s a big thing for my family. My family is not far away, so the logistics work. I think you get the best out of a footballer if he’s happy away from the game, it gives you the building blocks to perform on the pitch.

No doubt this is a blow to Simon Weaver’s side. The 28-year-old ended the season with nine goals and three assists for Town, playing a pivotal role in the side’s escape from relegation.

Notable goals include winners in the Sulphurites’ fixtures against Accrington Stanley and Morcambe in the final few months of the season.

The Stray Ferret recently reported that Harrogate Town were yet to agree contracts with six of its players, which included the number 24.

All hope is not lost for Town, though, as young winger Ellis Taylor was listed still under contract.

The 22-year-old has been one of Harrogate’s top performers this year, weighing in with seven goals and four assists, only one less contribution than the departing striker.

With important players like Anthony O’Connor, Warren Burrell and Jack Muldoon yet to agree contract terms, though, Simon Weaver may hope that player turnover does not become too high over the summer.
