Harrogate wine merchants opens in-store bar
A well-known Harrogate wine merchants has opened a small bar in its existing shop.
Ake and Humphris opened a section of its Leeds Road store as a wine bar earlier this month.
Tara Stagman, finance director at Ake and Humphris, told the Stray Ferret the company received an "amazing response" to pop-up wine bars at its Harrogate and Collingham sites last summer.
The response encouraged Ake and Humphris to make the bar a permanent fixture and the Harrogate site is now serving wine, beer and whisky.
"We’re offering a changing selection of our wonderful wines by the glass and our whisky of the week – ranging from something familiar to something a little bit different to explore", Ms Stagman said.
Paul Auty, sales manager at Ake and Humphris, added:
This week we’re pouring a real Italian classic, Valpolicella Superior, San Cassiano which is a must try wine for fans of bigger reds, with oodles of dark fruit, mingling with notes of winter spice. One to come in from the cold to!
If you prefer white, and wish to step off the beaten track, you can enjoy a glass of Valminor Alberino, deeply succulent but fresh, and full of memories of holidays in Northern Spain.
Our whisky of the week is the very approachable Tomatin 12 single malt, which will be in most people’s flavour wheelhouse as it has benefitted from maturation in both bourbon and sherry casks.
Mr Auty said customers can also enjoy any bottle of wine or beer off the shelf in-store with a small corkage charge.
The new wine bar seats up to 14 people and tables can be reserved.
Ms Stagman and Mr Auty said business is running as usual at the store, and people are still encouraged to choose their favourite drinks to be enjoyed at home.
The new wine bar is open Tuesday to Thursday, from midday until 8pm. It will open from midday until 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and midday until 7pm on Sundays.

The news comes after Ake and Humphris last year announced it was set to open an upmarket wine café on Harrogate’s Oxford Street.
Work to renovate the former Shuropody unit is underway but an official opening date has not yet been revealed.
