Archie Gray, the Harrogate schoolboy-turned-Leeds United superstar, is set to transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, according to reports.
The 18-year-old, who was allowed to skip some of his classes at St John Fisher Catholic High School in Harrogate to train with Leeds following a special request from then-manager Marcelo Bielsa, has made a big impact since becoming a regular member of United’s first team.
He was named EFL Championship Young Player of the Season at the EFL awards in April.
The central midfielder and occasional right-back signed a new four-year deal with Leeds in January, but Tottenham Hotspur have activated his £40 million release clause and he is understood to have undergone a routine medical exam this morning.
Centre back Joe Rodon, who played last season with Leeds United on loan from Tottenham, is understood to be coming the other way, joining Leeds permanently, meaning that Spurs will only pay £25-30 million for Gray.
The deal comes after Leeds rejected a £35 million offer from another London club, Brentford.
There is also speculation that Gray may use the move as a springboard for a later transfer to Real Madrid, current home of Jude Bellingham, hero of England's triumph over Slovakia in the Euros yesterday.
Former St Peter’s Primary School pupil Archie Gray comes from one of football’s great dynasties. His father, Andy Gray, also from Harrogate, played 490 club games for several teams, including Leeds United. Andy’s father, left-back Frankie Gray, is another former Leeds star, playing a total of 332 games over two spells for the club in the 1970s and ’80s.
Frankie’s elder brother, winger Eddie Gray, is another Leeds United giant, having played in the legendary team that won the 1972 FA Cup. Eddie’s son, the late Stuart Gray, was also a footballer, playing for Celtic and Rushden and Diamonds, among other clubs.
Eddie, Frankie and Andy are all former Scotland international players, but Archie has played matches at every level up to under-21 for England.
