The civic society is urging council corporate director Karl Battersby (pictured) to act to protect sites such as the Sun Colonnade.

Harrogate Civic Society has renewed its call for action to protect the town’s historic landmarks from “rotting”.

Last month the society, not known for its radicalism, took the unusual step of publicly criticising North Yorkshire Council for neglecting some of Harrogate’s most historic sites, such as the Sun Parlours and Tewit Well.

The Stray Ferret understands our coverage prompted a swift response from Karl Battersby, the council’s corporate director of environment, suggesting a meeting.

But with no date forthcoming, the society raised the issue again this week, questioning whether the Northallerton-based council cares about Harrogate’s heritage.

Michael Newby, society chair, said yesterday (October 14) he had initially welcomed the offer of a meeting but had become frustrated by the lack of progress:

The challenge seemed to get some sort of reaction with an offer that officers would meet with me to discuss the civic society’s concerns. Over two weeks later and with no suggested dates from the council I got back in touch to find out was happening. The subsequent replies suggest the answer is nothing.

This is very disappointing to say the least. As North Yorkshire Council continues to fob off concerns about our heritage it continues to rot.

A number of these assets, for example the Sun Parlours, St John’s Well and Tewit Well are listed buildings. Whilst their maintenance should be a priority we should not ignore structures like the West Park shelters or our historic serpent benches.

Harrogate Civic Society is not prepared to let this matter rest.

The Stray Ferret asked the council if it wished to respond to Mr Newby’s concerns.

In a brief statement today, a spokesperson said:

“Just to clarify that Mr Newby has been contacted about a meeting date.”
