A historic Knaresborough pub has been given the go-ahead to create two Airbnb holiday lets.
The grade two listed George and Dragon, which was built on Briggate in 1733, applied to North Yorkshire Council to build an extension to the rear of the pub.
The council has now approved the plans, which will see the existing rear single-storey extension including outside store area replaced by a two-storey brick-built extension.
The development also involves the creation of a ground floor dining room and first floor function room and reconfigured toilet accommodation. Five parking spaces will be provided in the yard area.
Council case officer Andy Hough said planning policies support “the retention, enhancement and viable use of community facilities, including public houses”.
Mr Hough added:
The development would result in some harm to the significance of the grade two listed building and its setting within the conservation area. However, following amendments to the scheme, the scale, form and design of the proposals have been refined, reducing the level of harm.
This harm must be weighed against the identified public benefits, which include securing the optimum viable use of the public house, improving its operational facilities, supporting the local economy, and providing visitor accommodation linked to the main use.
The outbuilding alterations are modest in nature, retain the existing fabric and bring the building back into a viable and sustainable use without harm to local character or the setting of the listed building.
The end of terrace pub is situated in a residential area within Knaresborough Conservation Area.
