North Yorkshire Council’s companies are expected to turn a £2 million profit this year — though some are performing better than others.

The Brierley Group, which consists of 11 firms which the council either runs or has an interest in, offer various different services.

According to the council’s financial outturn for last year, the group is forecast to have an overall pre-tax profit of £2.6 million in 2024/25.

But, all of them perform differently and some require more intervention from the authority than others.

With that in mind, the Stray Ferret has analysed how the group is expected to perform in the last financial year.

NYNet

NYNet, the council’s broadband company, is set to report a pre-tax profit of £398,000 for the last financial year.

A council report said the profit is down to a “higher than budgeted sales on diversified portfolio”.

First North Law

The council’s venture into specialist legal services, First North Law, is expected to make a pre-tax profit of £52,000.

The figure is expected to be £10,000 above budget.

North Yorkshire Education Services

North Yorkshire Education Services is projecting a profit of £808,000 for 2024/25.

A council report said the improvement in the service was down to the “maximisation of training income” and an emphasis on “high-volume, low-cost sales with significant profit potential”.

Brierley Homes

Brierley Homes, the council’s housing company, is expected to report a loss of £3m at the end of the last financial year.

The company is the only firm in the Brierley Group expected to report a loss. It puts the loss down to a delay in sales income and associated financing costs.

Align Property Services Ltd

Align Property Services Ltd, which works in property services, is set to report a £1.58 million for the last financial year.

The company is expected to pay a dividend to the council of £1 million in “recognition of their continued strong financial performance”.

Yorwaste

The council’s waste company, Yorwaste, is forecasting a pre-tax profit of £1.65 million for the next financial year.

The firm’s performance was put down to “collections revenue, third party tipping and third party recyclate processing”, according to a council report.

Veritau

Veirtau, the council’s auditing company, is forecasting a profit of £8,000 for the end of the 202425 financial year.

The company is run in partnership with City of York Council, as well as Middlesborough Council and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

The addition of two new member councils to the firm and growth in external work for the company has contributed to its reported profit, a council report said.

North Yorkshire Highways

North Yorkshire Highways, which oversees the council’s road maintenance, is expected to report a pre-tax profit of £75,000.

The firm is expected to report the profit despite “challenges of recruitment and budgetary pressures”.

Bracewell Homes

Bracewell Homes, the former Harrogate Borough Council housebuilding company which was transferred to North Yorkshire Council, is expected to report a pre-tax profit of £300,000.

The council said the company had seen an “improved cashflow position” during the year.

Brimhams Active

Brimhams Active, the company which used to run leisure facilities in the Harrogate district, ceased trading on November 30.

Its reported position between April 2024 and November 2024 was a £25,000 deficit, according to a council report.

The authority reported that income from the Turkish Baths and swimming lessons continued to be below budget, but this was offset through income from health suite memberships and corporate memberships.

Maple Park

Maple Park is a crematorium, wake facility and cafe based in Hambleton, which was transferred back to North Yorkshire Council in October 2024.

The council said its financial outturn was still being consolidated at quarter three and a final position will be reported in a quarter four report.

However, a forecast position shows that Maple Park had budgeted for a £223,000 profit for this year.
