Comprehensive resurfacing works in Ripon city centre are ahead of schedule, with a key stage of the £630,000 scheme due for completion at the weekend.

The first phase of the North Yorkshire Council-funded works began in late October and lasted for 25 days.

It halted on November 21 for a Christmas break, designed to lessen the impact on trade in the festive period.

Work resumed on January 7 and throughout all the project 'businesses open as usual' signage has been in place and the city's seven public car parks have remained accessible.

City council leader Andrew Williams told the Stray Ferret:

The contractors are now three weeks ahead of schedule on the Market Place roads and both Market Place East and Duck Hill will reopen at the weekend. This will enable the taxi rank to return to its usual location on the east side of Market Square and the temporary bus stop on Fishergate will be removed.

The works will then transfer to Market Place South where the excavations are already completed and then Market Place West from Monday February 10.

I know that the roadworks are an inconvenience and have been working with Ripon BID and North Yorkshire Council Highways to get the work done as quickly as possible.

With the progress made, it is anticipated that the project will be completed by the end of March, well in advance of the Easter holiday.
