Harrogate’s newest clinic may have only opened in December, but the services and treatments it offers are already having an impact in the local community and beyond.
Spire Harrogate Clinic welcomed its first patients to its clinic at Hornbeam Park on Monday, December 16, 2024. It is part of the private healthcare provider’s expanding portfolio of clinics across the UK, and the first in the district.
The clinic provides outpatient and day case treatments by a team of dedicated consultants and healthcare professionals. The clinical specialties include ophthalmology, dermatology, gynaecology, orthopaedics, neurology, cosmetics, urology and a private GP service.
82 year-old Eugene McDonough was amongst the first patients to be seen at the new clinic, and his consultation marks a new chapter in managing his knee pain.
15 years ago, Mr McDonough had partial replacements to both knees, followed by a full replacement the following year for his right knee.
For many years post-surgery they had caused him no trouble, but 12 months ago he began to experience joint pain in his left knee.

He was actually recommended that he undergo treatment by Mr Veysi Tuna Veysi, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon. When he did his own research, he discovered that the consultant was practicing at Spire Leeds Hospital and Spire Harrogate Clinic.
From there, he booked an appointment directly with Mr Veysi using Spire Healthcare’s online booking system at a time and date that suited him.
However, there are a number of different ways that patients can make an appointment, including referral by a community-based, NHS GP. Mr McDonough made the decision to pursue private medical treatment as opposed to using public health services as he was 'aware of the wait list so didn’t even attempt to secure an NHS appointment'.
One of Spire Healthcare’s underpinning ethos is to keep patient pathways as local as possible. For example, should a patient be seen in outpatients at Spire Harrogate Clinic and the decision is taken that they need a procedure under general anaesthetic then that that procedure would take place at a local Spire hospital with such services, like Leeds.
But any pre-operative examination and any follow-up appointment would be undertaken at Spire Harrogate Clinc.
The Spire Harrogate Clinic team
Prior to his appointment, Mr McDonough had already had an x-ray of his knee. Had that not been the case Spire Harrogate Clinic has a full radiology service which enables same-day x-rays to be requested and completed by the team.
Following his consultation with Mr Veysi, he was relieved that he could avoid going down a surgical route and is due to have a steroid knee injection in the coming weeks.
The orthopaedic consultants at Spire Harrogate Clinic can offer a wide range of procedures, including joint injections for hips, knees, elbows and shoulders. Often treatment can be offered on the same day as consultation, within the week, or at a time to suit the patient.
Mr McDonough described his experience from booking an appointment to insightful consultation and forming a treatment plan as ‘excellent’ throughout. He particularly praised the ‘friendly staff and delightful setting’ as well as the prompt appointments and bespoke, personal service.
At the clinic, everything has been carefully planned to ensure the highest standard of patient care for all procedures; from the modern facilities and latest technology to the many years of experience shared between the healthcare team, every detail has been meticulously thought of.

There are also a range of payment methods on offer to suit each patient’s circumstances, to make treatments as affordable and manageable as possible. Spire Healthcare’s patient advisers are always on hand to talk individuals through available finance options.
One of Spire Healthcare's key messages is 'the sooner you’re better, the better', and the team at Spire Harrogate is encourage others like Mr McDonough to put their health and wellbeing first in 2025 and explore what treatments and services the new brand-new clinic can offer them.
Justin Ash, chief executive at Spire Healthcare, said:
I’m pleased to see Spire Healthcare Harrogate Clinic open its doors to patients, and I know the whole team is excited to bring high quality, safe, personalised community care to North Yorkshire.
