The organiser of Knaresborough Christmas Market has said she is hopeful the event will go ahead on December 14 and 15 after Storm Darragh forced its postponement this weekend.

With gusts of up to 60mph forecast on Saturday, Hazel Haas made the difficult decision yesterday (December 5) not to proceed this weekend.

But after a day of intense negotiations, most traders have indicated they could reschedule for the following weekend.

Ms Haas said:

We are just waiting on North Yorkshire Council to confirm they can erect the stalls. We have got over 50 traders who are happy to come, bless them for rearranging their calendars at such short notice.

I wouldn't want too many days like yesterday! We effectively did a year's work in a day. We have a great team of volunteers, and it was very reassuring to be able to give a whole chunk of work to a person you can rely on to get the job done well. Much of the paperwork relies on North Yorkshire Council and their officers have been very helpful too.

Knaresborough's two-day Christmas market has more stalls than Harrogate Christmas Fayre and features many local traders.

It was due to be the centrepiece of a range of activities taking place this weekend in the town. They include the start of the Christmas tree festival at St John's, the artisan market at Gracious Street Methodist Church and the Chrismouse trail, which are still taking place.
