A Knaresborough man who died after being buried in an avalanche at a ski resort in France has been named.
Josh Byers, 27, was killed in an avalanche shortly after 10am on Thursday (April 17) at the Val Thorens ski resort in the Savoie region of south-west France, according to local prosecutor Benoît Bachelet.
Police officers in the area were alerted by a witness and managed to pull him from the snow. He was found in cardiac arrest.
He was given first aid at the scene and taken to a hospital in Grenoble, in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region, where he later died.
Josh was named locally on a fundraising page started by friends of the family, which was set up to support his family.
The fundraiser said:
Over the Easter break, Jenny and Lee Byers received heart breaking news that their son, Josh, had lost his life in an avalanche whilst away in France.
Anyone who knows the family, knows how close they are and how they would do anything for anyone in need. This is our time to help them.
During the next few weeks and months, there will be costs to bring Josh home and to prepare for saying goodbye. We hope this page will allow everyone the chance to donate to reduce the financial burden on the family at such a sad time.
At the time of writing, the fundraiser has gathered more then £11,000 in support of the family with nearly 300 donations.
