A route in Knaresborough has been named as one of the cleanest walks in the UK, a survey has found.
The River Nidd Waterside Walk runs for almost two miles along the river, and includes Knaresborough Castle and Conyngham Hall.
It is known as one of the most scenic in Yorkshire but now a survey by cottage rental company Independent Cottages has also ranked it highly for cleanliness.
Independent Cottages surveyed reviews of walks rated four stars or above on TripAdvisor for keywords such as “messy”, “unclean”, “litter” and “dog mess”.
The Knaresborough walk received zero mentions of these keywords across almost 400 TripAdvisor reviews.
It ranked third behind The Gobbins, in County Antrim, and Watersmeet Trail, in Devon, respectively.
All three had zero comments but the other two ranked higher by virtue of having more reviews. The Gobbins had 1,342 reviews, Watersmeet Trail had 401 and the River Nidd Waterside Walk had 389.
The survey described the riverside path, which passes beneath the town's famous viaduct, as "a walk that proves you don’t need to climb mountains to have a beautiful hiking experience".
It adds:
The route takes you past honey-coloured Georgian houses, beneath the impressive railway viaduct, and through the dramatic Nidd Gorge. It’s flat, accessible and perfect for a morning stroll or afternoon wander.
