A jacket potato business has been granted planning permission to operate in Knaresborough.
Str8 Jackets will provide a “fast and easy over the counter experience” at 22 High Street, according to the man behind the venture.
North Yorkshire Council granted planning permission this week, despite an objection by Knaresborough Town Council, which was concerned about nearby homes suffering increased noise and odour, as well as parking on the busy High Street.
In her decision report, council case officer Stephanie O’Brien acknowledged concerns about the location, but said noise and smell concerns had been allayed when the council was informed the proposed equipment consisted only of a drinks fridge, microwave and a jacket potato oven.
Regarding congestion, Ms O’Brien said:
There are two nearby hot food takeaways in the vicinity (Sapphire and Pizza Grill), however both of these operate in the evening, whereas the proposed jacket potato takeaway will be a daytime operation. It is not considered that this would result in a concentration of similar uses or have adverse impact on the vitality of the centre.
York-based Craig Eastwood, chief executive of Str8 Jackets, said in planning documents he had no plans to operate online or provide delivery services. He added:
We only plan to offer a fast and easy over the counter experience operating with in daytime hours of 10am until 6pm to reduce the impact the shop might have on residents. All deliveries to the shop will be taken in from around the back of the shop to lessen the impact on the high street. We consider the stopping of delivery vans on the main high street to be too dangerous.
The business will be based in a listed building in the town’s conservation area, which according to planning documents previously operated as a hairdresser.
