Hornbeam Park Ltd has confirmed it is drawing up plans to convert Nuffield Health’s gym in Harrogate into offices, raising uncertainty over the facility’s future.
Nuffield Health leases the building at Hornbeam Park from the property owner.
As reported by the Stray Ferret on Tuesday (October 20), Hornbeam Park Ltd has been granted planning permission by North Yorkshire Council for external alterations to the building, including the installation of new windows and rooflights.
However, the planning application also proposed changing the building’s use from “indoor sport, recreation or fitness” to “offices”.
The plans have caused concern among gym members, with questions raised about whether the facility will remain open.
Nuffield Health said it intended to stay at the site, but its current lease is due to expire in five months.
A spokesperson said: “It is not unusual for landlords to explore options ahead of lease renewals, and we remain optimistic that a positive outcome can be reached that enables us to continue providing fitness and wellbeing services to local residents.”
However, with no new lease agreed, the building’s future remains uncertain.
Jackie Wilson, facilities manager for Hornbeam Park Ltd, confirmed today (October 22) that the company is in discussions with another business about taking over the unit.
She said: “The lease is due to expire on March 24, 2027 and in the absence of a new lease we are working with a third party for use as a business centre.”
The proposed change of use means the future of the gym will depend, in part, on whether a new lease can be agreed before the existing arrangement expires.
