Walk-in pressure points are available in 30 libraries across North Yorkshire this week offering free blood pressure checks.

Free blood pressure checks are available at local libraries this week.

The national charity Blood Pressure UK is running a nationwide testing and awareness week called Know Your Numbers, which aims to raise people’s awareness of the health risks of high blood pressure.

North Yorkshire Council is supporting the initiative by organising free blood pressure checks at self-service pressure stations set up at 30 libraries in the county, including Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough and Boroughbridge.

According to the British Heart Foundation, 85,000 people in North Yorkshire are living with heart and circulatory diseases. High blood pressure is a major cause of the diseases and can also lead to vascular dementia.

North Yorkshire Council leader Carl Les said:

Often referred to as the ‘silent killer’, high blood pressure can result in heart attacks and strokes and isn't just a worry for older people.

It’s so important to get your blood pressure checked and we are delighted that our libraries are delivering such a worthwhile service. Please do pop into one of the participating local libraries to get your blood pressure checked next week.

The scales available in local libraries are aimed to alleviate pressure on GPs.

You can just turn-up and use the self-service stations. Further information is available here.
