Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Tom Gordon has submitted a parliamentary motion celebrating a local Christmas song.
Merry Christmas Harrogate was launched last week in the hope of becoming an unlikely festive number one. So far it has had 6,500 views on YouTube.
Now Liberal Democrat Mr Gordon has submitted an early day motion congratulating those behind it.
Early day motions are put forward for parliamentary debate but few actually achieve this. Instead they are more commonly used to raise awareness of issues.
Mr Gordon’s motion says:
That this House congratulates the Straymen, Simon Cotton, Joe Pearce, the Harrogate BID, and all other individuals and organisations involved on [sic] the release of the single ‘Merry Christmas Harrogate’; highlights the dedication of all those involved to improving and advertising the town of Harrogate and all that it offers; and wishes them luck in the Christmas charts.

At the time of going to press, Mr Gordon and one other MP had signed to support the motion.
Hotelier Simon Cotton wrote the lyrics to the song, which he said celebrates Harrogate as the perfect Christmas town.
Mr Cotton’s colleague, Joe Pearce, wrote the music and a band called The Straymen was formed specially to bring the song to life.
Mr Gordon today said he wanted to recognise the hard work that went into the song by putting forward the motion.
He added:
It is about celebrating all that Harrogate is at Christmas.
Thank you to everyone involved in producing this single. It’s a great way to promote the town, and I hope that many people will watch it and come to Harrogate to see for themselves what a great town it is.
