Fears that Ripon's Remembrance Sunday commemoration on November 10 could be affected by major roadworks in the city have been allayed.
From Monday, October 28, the first four-week phase of a £630,000 programme of resurfacing works, will start in Market Place East.
City council leader Andrew Williams, who also represents the Minster and Moorside division on North Yorkshire Council, told the Stray Ferret:
The Remembrance Sunday events, which include the Royal Engineers marching past the town hall on Market Place South and down Kirkgate to the civic service at the cathedral will be unaffected.
No roadworks will be taking place at these locations, though both roads will be closed to traffic.
I have been in numerous meetings planning for this major project, which involves reconstruction as well as resurfacing of the roads that run around Market Square, but works of this magnitude are bound to cause disruption and North Yorkshire Council’s traffic engineers will be taking as many measures as possible to keep disruption to a minimum
.
The measures will include temporary relocation of the taxi rank to Market Place West and a number of traffic diversions.
Retired sapper Kenn Hart, who is chairman of Ripon's Royal Engineers Association, said:
The march past Ripon Town Hall will be unaffected by the major roadworks in Market Place East
Our members were very concerned when we heard about the start date for the roadworks, particularly as some people were saying that we would not be able to march past the town hall.
We are pleased to have clarification that this is not the case, as this is a very special year for Ripon's Royal Engineers, with our celebration of the 75th anniversary of being granted freedom of the city, which followed on from commemoration events in June marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
Reconstruction and resurfacing of Market Place East is scheduled to be completed over four weeks and the city centre roadworks will then be halted until January 7, when work will start on Market Place West.
